Will Braces Stain My Teeth?
Austin, TX – There are many things to consider when getting braces. While braces will create a healthier smile, they do have an impact on your daily life. But do you also need to worry about braces leaving stains on your teeth? Dr. Silvana Gonzalez discusses a common myth that braces stain teeth.
Do Braces Cause Permanent Stains?
The most common myth is that braces themselves cause permanent stains on the teeth. This is not at all true – the braces themselves don’t stain, but rather plaque and food particles can cause staining. People may associate this with braces because once the brackets are removed, discoloration may be visible.
This discoloration, however, is not the fault of the braces, but of the person wearing the braces. Practicing proper oral hygiene is always important, but never so much as when you are in braces. This is to ensure your teeth stay healthy, but also to avoid discoloration.
Foods and Drinks to Avoid for a Brighter Smile
People may also mistakenly believe that as long as the food isn’t too hard, sticky, chewy, or crunchy it’s ok to eat while in braces. But there are some foods that may be more likely to stain your teeth. If you drink a lot of tea, coffee, red wine, or dark sodas while in braces, your teeth may start to stain. Likewise, dark colored foods such as berries can leave stains behind. And when your braces are removed, these will become even more apparent because the portion of teeth behind the brackets will not be discolored.
People may try to tell you that stains are inevitable if you wear braces, but this just isn’t the case. So, how can you avoid it looking like your teeth are stained?
Proactive Measures to Prevent Staining
The tried-and-true way to avoid having your teeth look stained once your braces are removed is to practice good oral hygiene. You can adopt proactive measures that keep staining at bay.
Brush and Floss Regularly
Brush and floss especially after meals, to remove food particles and brush away any sugars that could eat away at your enamel. Use additional tools, such as floss threaders and Waterpiks, to help.
Practice Mindful Eating
You already have to modify your diet some while in braces, so be sure you’re avoiding foods that have a higher likelihood of staining your teeth. It’s also helpful to drink plenty of water throughout the day to help mitigate the risk of stains.
Maintain Regular Checkups
Visit your dentist for regular checkups throughout your orthodontic treatment. You still need those regular cleanings, even while in braces. Your dentist can also help spot minor issues before they become big ones.
While braces themselves do not stain teeth, it is crucial to pay close attention to your oral hygiene while in braces. Ask your orthodontist for tips to keep your smile healthy and bright both during and after your treatment.
